It’s been years and years since I’ve walked into a River Island store – there is something about them that makes me feel old.
One, there is loud music – and I mean really loud. It’s like going to the clubs … and everyone knows I last all of 20 minutes in the clubs before suggesting a 1am wood fired pizza (this is a thing in Oxford) and an over priced taxi home to my warm and comfy bed!
Two, have you tried fighting the kids for a pair of ripped jeans? I mean really, it’s the land of size 6 teenagers in crop top, skinnies, top knots, and fashion trainers. There’s me in my tailored blazer and full skirt with elbows not pointy enough to break my way through the crowds to the items I really want to try!
Three, I break through the land of top knotted teens only to find the largest size is a 14. Cue deadpan unimpressed face. Most of the River Island runs to an 18 and their plus range runs to a 24 – I’m yet to find any of this in my local stores.
A recent trip to my local Oxford store was no different – well, it was slightly different. I found blouses in a size 16 which did go over my shoulders – I just then couldn’t lift my arms once they were on.
Because of this, I’ve long discounted River Island as a place for me to shop. Yet, emboldened by RI Plus Over-the-Knee boots (seen here) and the success of the likes of Lottie L’Amour and Nerd About Town, I decided to give them more of a chance.
There range is a little different to my normal style – it is a little edgier, a little more experimental. This is great as I’m becoming more bold in my fashion choices – I’m playing more with prints, textures and shapes I wouldn’t normally try. I’m also trying to embrace casuals – and there are so many amazing items in River Island that are both trend led yet embody that casual, relaxed feel.
These are just some of my favourite items right now …
Now, I’m not going to lie – some of these may already be on their way to me so stay tuned for much more River Island stuff in the coming weeks.
But, first, am I cool enough for the back pack?
