Lingerie pictures: a guide to at-home photography

Taking great lingerie pictures, to a boudoir standard, is an art form. A form that I do not have. But 90% of lingerie photography is about being relaxed in front of the camera, and this is how I do that.

I’m not promising you boudoir standard lingerie pictures. The majority of my lingerie pictures are not that. They just a chubby girl dancing about her house (or the woods) in her pants. They are amateur in their composition and they are mostly shot using a Olympus Pen on auto. A timer and a tripod are my most constant companion when taking lingerie pictures with the occasional interruption of my dog who likes to jump into most of my photos.

Despite this, my lingerie photos are often my favourite. Whether they be part of my lingerie in the wild series or a cosy afternoon at home, lingerie photos are often the photos where I am most relaxed and happiest in front of the camera. This could be because I’m an outrageous exhibitionist, or it could be that I just love lingerie. Both are true. But I feel the biggest reason that I love my lingerie photography so much is that I’ve developed a formula for taking the photos that just makes me feel joyful. And you can achieve that too!

It is all about confidence

Despite what many people believe, my confidence is not just there. It is something that I work on constantly. I tell myself I look great daily and I give positive affirmations to my body to remind myself that it is beautiful and strong and powerful.

Confidence takes time and you may not be there yet. But this shouldn’t put you off snapping those pictures. In fact, snapping lingerie pictures and sharing them on the internet has definitely helped me to grow in my own confidence.

Oh look, I’m fat in my underwear on Instagram. And nobody died!!!!

I didn’t die! No-one hurled rotten tomatoes at me when I went to the local shop!

Everyone survived!

But there are some really simply things you can do to boost your confidence right now.

Only shot when you’re feeling good

If you’re not feeling at your best, this will show in the photos. Make sure you’re feeling relaxed and happy. You’ve had some fresh air or you’ve spent time doing something that makes you feel good. Whatever your self-care routine may be, practice that.

For me, I always go for a long dog walk before preparing to shoot. I then take a blissfully long shower and moisturise all over. This means fresh as a daisy for the camera and feeling my very best.

Choose the right lingerie!

Wear something that makes you feel amazingly sexy and powerful. Love stockings? Invest in a new pair. Adore bralettes? Put them on.

Cover up!

Less isn’t always more and we all have insecurities. Not everyone will feel comfortable in thong and a triangle bra and being comfortable in the amount of skin your showing is essential for feeling confident in front of the camera.

If you feel insecure about your arms it is fine to hide them with a robe or a blanket. If your tummy is an area you’re yet to fall in love, wear high waisted pants, a garter belt, or a body.

Often, I begin my lingerie shoots wearing a robe or wrapped in blanket. As I warm up to the camera and the mood, I shed the layers – performing my own personal strip tease. It relaxes me and makes the whole event feel more joyous.

Set the scene

I spend more and more time setting a scene for pictures. I want to portray a mood, a feeling. To do this, I consider the outlook. I move furniture around and drag plants into the frame – I always feel my best when near greenery. I also always make sure I’m buy a window for the best lighting.

Have a dance party

Or at least have some kind of fun. Whenever I’m shooting alone, I put on some great music and dance away to it whilst my camera snaps away on a timer setting. This is the reason I have so much movement to my photos. And why I’m smiling so much in all my recent shoots. You can even see a little snippet of me doing just that on my Instagram.

If you are shooting with someone behind the camera, make sure they’re someone you trust enough to have fun with. When my best friend shoots me, she is mostly laughing and joking about. The same os true of my husband, mostly because I often get him to pose for me so I can set up the scene. I haven’t convinced him to wear my pants for those photos yet though!

Ultimately, you need to do what makes you feel best about yourself. That way, you will take the best photos and, when looking back on those photos, you will remember that euphoric moments when you thought ‘damn, I feel good’.

Now, will you be taking your own lingerie pictures sometime soon?

You’re right about needing to feel comfortable, both in what you’re wearing and the surroundings. I don’t think I’d feel comfortable having photos taken in my underwear but that’s a body confidence thing x
