Wearing Lingerie with Confidence

Wearing lingerie can be incredibly empowering. But it can also be incredibly nerve racking. So how do you ensure that you feel the very best when donning those special pieces?

Believe it or not, wearing lingerie (particularly being photographed in lingerie) hasn’t always been completely natural to me. I cringe at how awkward I look in my early lingerie pictures. Before taking those photographs I would go through a heavy routine. Plastering layers of make-up, styling my hair to perfection. Making my husband take a thousand shots of awkward poses at a thousand different angles to get everything just right. Even after all of that, sharing the pictures was terrifying.

You see, it is completely normal to feel a little insecure if you’re wearing something that is out of the ordinary. And for many, donning a fancy lingerie set isn’t a common occurrence. It is saved for special occasions; Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays, date night. In a recent poll on my Instagram, most of my followers admitted to only wearing lingerie for a sexual partner. Rarely did they wear lingerie for themselves. Others professed to being too timid to show their sexual partner the lingerie they had bought with them in mind. They simply didn’t feel confident enough to reveal themselves.

So how do you over come these internal confidence issues? How do you make sure you feel completely empowered when wearing that magnificent piece of new lingerie?

Choose the right lingerie for you

Making sure that you’re wearing the right lingerie for you is key to feeling good in lingerie. Too often we are sucked into believing that lingerie needs to be overtly sexual; filled with nods to bondage, lingerie is too often seen as restrictive and lacking in comfort. Of course, it can be all of these things, but it can also be fun and flirtatious. Try teddies, satin slips, lace bodies, bralettes, and elegant robes. They are all lingerie items that may make you feel more comfortable and less like a performance artist.

Make sure it fits

Well fitting lingerie is key. If you don’t feel comfortable, it’s hard to feel sexy. Get yourself measured when it comes to structured items like bras and basques and make sure to follow a fitting guide – I highly recommend this one from Curvy Kate.

Ease into lingerie with accessories

Jumping head first into a lace bra and panty set with a matching suspender belt can be daunting. Wearing hosiery or a dainty body chain are great ways to ease into wearing lingerie.

Don’t be scared to cover up

Body confidence is a major issue for women – especially when it coes to wearing lingerie. You’re not going to feel confident and empowered if you’re worried about your “problem area”.

I am a big believer there is no such thing as a “problem area”. However, I also realise that we all have insecurities about our bodies. Sometimes, we’re just not ready to cast aside those insecurities and embrace our bodies in their entirety. In these instances, a robe or an oversized shirt can do wonders for making you feel a little more confident. I also find a robe or a white shirt excessively sexy!

Remember that all bodies are beautiful

Filling my social media with a diverse range of scantily clad bodies has helped my own confidence levels. The more I see different bodies, the more I accept I’m not going to look like the model in the advert.

Adverts are created by make up artists, expensive lighting set-ups, photographers to guide poses and to edit the final shot. For instance, it’s not uncommon for lingerie models to wear strapless bras beneath an item to give the appearance of perky boobs. The bra is then photoshopped out of the final image you see online. This has built a false and unattainable beauty ideal for so many of us.

However, seeing unedited pictures of women in all kinds of lingerie has really helped me realise that my slightly droopy boobs and bulging hips aren’t anything unusual. And this helps me to feel better about myself when wearing even the riskiest of lingerie.

Don’t take it too seriously

Ultimately, wearing lingerie is supposed to be enjoyable. We need to make sure that we’re having fun when wearing it. Otherwise, we will never feel truly empowered and confident in it. Try a dance party in your bedroom wearing your favourite lingerie. Or some fun and flirty selfies that will make you feel that little more buoyant. If you’re having fun, you’ll feel better and instantly your confidence levels will lift.

So enjoy that lingerie and wear it with pride – after all, you’re beautiful!
